Political Friend or Enemy

I have come to the age and mind to believe that no matter who we elect to our congress that my wallet will be taken from me. All attempts to protect what little income I have coming in must go to the greater good they say with a political smile as they leave in their limousine. The upcoming presidential election and congressional elections are no different now than they were fifty years ago or even one hundred years ago. The end result is that those of us in the middle class are going to get screwed over to benefit the people at the bottom and most certainly the people at the top. That is the sickness of politics. Somebody has to pay for the dreams of a more perfect society. Sometimes I find myself at the point where my check will bounce to the moon given the ambitions of many political leaders. And yet they cash my check anyway and give my grandchildren the lean or IOU that must be paid down the road.

I long for the days of a person of true character and convictions that will run for president and follow through with his or her promises. It seems that the only election going on is that of the Republican candidates because the President is running unopposed as a Democrat. I find it odd that none of the Republican's are reaching out to the middle class voters. Their ambition seems to be locked on people that can afford not to care about the economy, not to care about jobs, and not to care about people in general. Everything the GOP candidates are proposing or promising is harmful if not destructive to the middle and lower classes.

I enjoy watching Santorum make a complete ass of himself and his supporters every time he opens his mouth. Mitt Romney makes me laugh with his attempts to be a regular guy even though he has over a hundred million in the bank. Don't let me get started with history professor Newt. Newt would be better off buying a tour ticket of the White House than trying to occupy it by the election process.

In the end, my friend John Myste has a very good point for those of us that think that they will not vote this election because "None of the Above" seem to be of the quality of character needed to occupy the highest office in the land. His point is the selection of justices to the Supreme Court. There is a 5-4 conservative leaning on the current bench and the next President of the United States could have the opportunity to appoint several more justices to that court. Politics will always be a screwing over of the middle class no matter what political party is in charge but the court is like luggage. You keep that stuff forever. I would by far rather have a supreme court with a liberal leaning than one that would wipe its backside with the Constitution of the United States.

When the rights of corporations are more clearly defined or defended in opposition to the rights of individuals then the American experiment is in jeopardy of ultimate failure.

Corporate Freedom of Speech

I was following the Supreme Court decisions this week and once again they put the time machine of American justice in reverse nine decades. In the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and ruling 5-4 stating that corporations do in fact have freedom of speech and can dump as much money as they want into any political campaign. Corporations have freedom of Speech???

And it turns out that I am in full disagreement with the nice folks over at the ACLU and the NRA on this Constitutional issue. Last time I checked, freedom of speech was an individuals right. Did I miss and addendum somewhere along the way? Do you wonder if the founding fathers of this nation were really thinking that corporations should have a stronger voice than any one individual when they came up with that silly freedom of speech thingy.

Obama continues to assail Supreme Court decision

President Obama continued to assail the Supreme Court decision striking down limits on corporate spending in political campaigns, saying Saturday that the ruling "strikes at our democracy itself."

Speaking in his weekly address, Obama said the ruling this week "handed a huge victory to the special interests and their lobbyists - and a powerful blow to our efforts to rein in corporate influence." - Washington Post

If corporations can now donate as much as they want into campaigns then they should also take up the slack in the budget deficit to support our government and national monuments. Such as…

Pat Buchanan, the other White Meat

It doesn't take much to come to the conclusion that Pat Buchanan, former Nixon speech writer and Republican candidate for President long ago in a galaxy far far away is a white supremist. In his fat and happy little world, all things are controlled by rich, white, Republicans. There are no woman equal to the task of the SCOTUS, there are no people of any race other than his lily white skin that deserve to be in high office.

I think it is only right that we award Mr. Buchanan the SCUMBAG trophy. This idiot that MSNBC has on the payroll for every news magazine show they have is a throwback to times long gone bye bye. I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears for this interview with Rachel Maddow with our SCUMBAG recipient. Pat actually thinks that America was built only by rich white folks. He actually thinks that someone like Judge Sotomayor, who graduated at the top of her class isn’t smart enough for SCOTUS??? MSNBC should fire his fat white ass! Or is MSNBC backing up what their paid political spokesman has to say?

GOP Leadership Confusion

I have to agree with Newt Gingrich that political power comes in cycles and the Republican Party is out of favor right now. What is really fun to watch is the entire GOP going after one another trying to decide where the hell the political party should stand before the 2010 elections. It’s like watching one neighbor toss the leaves over the others fence only to have the same process reversed just a few hours later. Rush Limbaugh wants to throw everyone out of the party that does not boot step to his demands and Newt Gingrich who has no official political connection to the RNC is going around demanding that Speaker Pelosi step down just because he says so. Then you have RNC Chairman Michael Steele telling everyone to cool it before they all screw up the smoke and mirrors deal he is trying to build. Nobody is in charge and that is a good thing for those of us that tend to back President Obama.

End result is Newt is pissed because he can’t do the Michael Jackson moonwalk dance step and Rush is even more pissed because he can’t find a pair of Jordache jeans that will fit his fat ass. No offense intended to Republican or Democrat voters with good living voluptuous curves in the buttocks region of your bodies. You earned every bit of it and you should be proud that “baby got back”. Feel free to steal that phrase Mr. Steele.

Up out of all the fuss comes some common sense amongst the GOP when it comes to confirming Judge Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Sen. John Cornyn is pissed that Newt and Rush are intent on destroying his political party. And he doesn’t like the attack mode they are aggressively engaged in…

Cornyn on Thursday said statements calling Sotomayor a racist are 'terrible.'

(CNN) — A top Senate Republican is taking aim at recent statements from conservative commentators Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich suggesting Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a "racist."

"I think it's terrible," Sen. John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told NPR's "All Things Considered" Thursday. "This is not the kind of tone any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advise and consent.”

Both the popular radio host and former GOP House Speaker have suggested Obama's pick for the high court is a racist while referencing a 2001 speech at Berkeley during which Sotomayor said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." - CNN

Good for Senator Cornyn and I hope he can come to the pulpit and actually make some sense over at the Republican Party. Somebody has to take the helm because they are going the way of the Dodo bird right now. How many moderate Republican’s is Rush Limbaugh going to toss out of his holier than thou political party before somebody tosses his ass to the curb? As for the Newt aka porno king and former Speaker of the House, he’s just selling his latest book and any media attention for him equals sales of his book. Ergo, he is so staunch in his political opinions that he even went on Jon Stewart and the Daily show this week to sell even more copies of his book.

For now, 2010 and the election of yet another new Congress is looking damn good for those of us on the left side of the aisle.

Supreme Court Pick

Speculation is running rampant for President Obama’s replacement choice for Justice David Souter of the Supreme Court. Justice Souter was appointed by former President Daddy Bush and he shocked the hell out of the right wing thinkers when it turned out he was a liberal leaning and thinking justice. That was a big surprise, a lawyer from Vermont? A state that makes Mass-a-two-sticks look almost right wing in political thinking.

Over the past couple of years the Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) has been tilted to the right side of the political and literal definition of our laws and now is the time to swing the pendulum back toward the center. Former President Bush not only went for the most conservative of thought appointees but he then went one better and moved his nominee, Justice Roberts, up to the position of running the courts agenda. You might recall that Justice Roberts was the guy giving the oath to President Elect Obama on inauguration day and screwed up the oath of office so they had to do a do over just to make sure it was legit later.

I don’t envy the President for this decision but I honestly believe that he should pick a liberal woman of minority descent for the seat on the highest court in the land. My reasoning for such a pick is to include the majority of the American population in our judicial processes and to replace the arguments offered by former Justice Susan Day O’Connor. Not to sound sexist but ladies like to go to the little girls room in pairs to powder their nose and Justice Ginsberg has been flying solo far to long.

Politically, appointing a minority woman to the bench would consolidate and confirm to moderate, liberal, and some right wing woman voters that equality and the peoples real voice will be heard at the SCOTUS. Many people, including yours truly, honestly do not believe that the SCOTUS is living in the real world. The world that is happening in our courts every single day is not what many of the current Justices have ever seen. In picking a minority woman candidate of untouchable character and having her voice part of the decision that is the third arm of our government could only be a good thing. In doing so it would strip the right wing of many potential voters in the 2010 election and ensure a Democrat majority in the House and Senate. This isn’t the last candidate for the SCOTUS President Obama will have either. I’m betting that in the next eight years President Obama will have three or more seats to fill on the Supreme Court. Did I mention he should pick a fairly young minority woman? Someone that can pull off twenty to thirty years on the bench. This a lifetime appointment that you do not get a do over on.

After all is said and done, even picking a Justice for the Supreme Court is always politics at its best and worst depending on what side of the aisle you vote.
