Our New Civic Duty to Learn More About Propaganda

Hello Papamoka Bloggers! It's clear to me that we're living through some pretty tough times. It's almost like we've split into three different camps, with the right and left tugging at those in the middle to the point of exhaustion. The big problem is how hard some are tugging.

Americans are being lied to more than ever, and sadly there doesn't seem to be any force powerful enough to prevent it. It's getting out of control, and things are getting very dangerous.

Aside from terrorism, the evil in America today is coming from politicians and corporate interests. They have climbed into bed together, and the American people are the ones being screwed. Political messages are getting more and more complicated. Some might say too complicated. Issues are being decided less on debate and more on paid punditry.

Politics has always been a dirty job, but somehow the duels and corrupt leaders of the past pale in comparison to the billions spent on the lies and deceit of today. Modern political "warfare" seems larger and nastier somehow, and the lies seem to infect more people. I keep looking for a silver lining, but without a big success like true health care reform, the skies look dark to me.

The Industrial Revolution sullied America's politicians like the London skyline. The nineteenth century brought us President Grant smoking cigars with power brokers in the lobby of the Willard Hotel. Those conversations have grown from bad to worse. Lobbying today is more secretive and the interests more corrupt. Corporate shills now prowl Congress handing out huge checks buying huge favors.

Unless we can fight our way through their money and lies our American democracy - our very freedom to govern ourselves based on a free press and simple truths - is at risk of failure.

Despite the best efforts of a few it seems the lies are just too many and too often. Ironically, the political electorate are more powerful than ever due to email and the Internet, yet powerful special interests have worked hard to keep their media and message at full volume despite the innovations. Their lies far outpace our desire for truth. As usual, they manipulate us, despite our best efforts.

We need our political leaders to have the backbone and the skills to compete against today's powerful, rich, private sector power brokers. It's possible, with the exception of the Civil War era, we need their leadership more than ever.

Even the President of the United States fights an uphill battle to get his/our message out - the message we supported during the election. Unfortunately, our so-called 24/7 "news" channels fill the airwaves with so many lies and so much ado about nothing that Americans forget their best interests and lose focus. The airwaves have become a minefield of sorts.

Sadly, health care is only the tip of the iceberg. If we don't win the war against disinformation now, we may never win. The special interest forces and their great wealth may corrupt our system to the point where reform is impossible. It may sound hyperbolic, but corporations may ultimately control the levers of power - if they don't already.

Unless Republicans and their supporters see the light, corporate money, political corruption, greed, and worst of all, a disregard for what is in the best interest of the American people, may be our political future. We need to fight back! We need to find a way to shut down the spin doctors, the liars and the money changers.

Greedy, soulless journalists and money-grubbing pundits cannot be allowed to destroy 230+ years of free press and good governance.

What is the solution? A grassroots movement? A constitutional convention for a constitutional amendment baring corporate involvement in politics? Who knows, but I suggest we start thinking. If health care/insurance reform falls victim to their lies and deceit, then I think it is a clear sign that something must be done before it's too late.

McCain and Palin Lies

By now, everyone that reads an online blog knows that the Sarah Palin RNC speech was full of lies. The bridge to nowhere that she was all for before she was against it was her John Kerry moment in political history. Her statement that Barack Obama has never passed any legislation in the U.S. Senate (129 in fact). That she sold the Governors jet on Ebay but actually only listed it on Ebay, twice. She actually sold it eventually through a broker for a loss of close to $750,000 that the people of Alaska took the hit for. Hint, hint to real reporters, who bought the jet from the Governor of Alaska? Follow the money! She claims to have cut spending in her home town but put them into debt for generations under her leadership. Zero budget deficit before Palin (BP), After Palin (AP) $29,000,000. How does a population of 9,000 people pay off that kind of debt?

Then you have Senator (Maverick) McCain repeating the same lies from Palin as if she is his savior in this political race. During his acceptance speech he offered no plans to change the status quo other than he is a Maverick? He will bring change, but it’s a secret as to how and when? Where was the health care issue, where was the veterans issues, no wait, he covered veterans issues with a back drop picture of Walter Reed School in California. A MAJOR BLUNDER! Somebody didn't "vette" the search engine picture that was plastered behind McCain on the monster video green screen behind McCain during his acceptance speech for the Repulican Nomination for President. Nobody from the McCain campaign has said to date that it was supposed to be Walter Reed Hospital for wounded veterans but the opinions and context of his speech dictate that it was supposed to be. We are supposed to assume it was a mistake but if you look at John McCain’s record on voting for veteran benefits and funding it was a slap in the face to all veterans. Over at the Gun Toting Liberal he has this to say…

"So, here is the guy who wants to play “tough guy” with Iran. If the man and his oh-so-competent staff can’t find Walter Reed Army Medical Center on the Internets, how in the HELL can we be certain they’re going to be able to locate Iran?" - Gun Toting Liberal (My Brother from another mother on the blogosphere)

John McCain is running his campaign as an outside observer and I honestly believe that his own campaign staff is incompetent. Which then begs the question of who he will pull into his confidence as cabinet members? America has had enough of Bush incompetence, misdirection, lies, and out right avoidance of the truth and issues facing our nation. If John McCain had vetted his choice for Vice President as he and his staff should have then he would have known all of these bombshells existed, they didn’t. Nobody did their homework in the McCain camp and it shows. Now they are crying that the Mains Stream Media (MSM) is being unfair in asking his Vice President choice hard questions? Two words, Hillary Clinton!

McCain in his choice for VP assumed that simply because Sarah Palin is a woman she would automatically draw a large portion of the Hillary Clinton supporters that just happen to have a uterus. That is so far from the truth and John McCain made a huge mistake. Then again, the truth is something his anti-veteran based voting record proves out.

So the question is right in front of us about selecting our next President of the United States, more lies or the truth? Someone offering hope, real change, a better tomorrow, or someone that has no clue as to whom his Vice President pick actually is. McCain’s picking Governor Sarah Palin is very much similar to sexually transmitted diseases, he may be in bed with her now politically but who has she been in bed with politically before he picked her for his Vice President?

Those are legitimate questions to be asked by the MSM! And then some…

Palin Donation Queen for Obama

Even though Governor Sarah Palin probably gave one of her best speeches ever at the RNC as a politician, she forgot the basic rules of politics. Facts are golden, rhetoric is empty, and the last one, don’t get caught in a lie when bashing your opponent. I give Governor Palin credit for a speech that sold well on television. She was a great poster girl for the McCain campaign but looking and sounding good does nothing without policy and plans to fix America. Governor Palin offered not even one plan to change the status quo in Washington but she sure was good at telling you who to be afraid of.

One of the good things she managed to accomplish last night in her acceptance speech as McCain’s VP was infuriate the Obama political base. Some estimates are claiming to the tune of $8 to $10 Million since she bashed the hell out of Obama’s experience as a candidate for President. Over at Politico they have this to say on the subject…

Palin raises $8 million — for Obama
Obama's coffers have been filling since Sarah Palin attacked him repeatedly in St. Paul last night.

An Obama aide confirms Drudge's report that Obama has raised about $8 million from more than 130,000 donors and is on pace to raise $10 million by the time McCain reaches the stage tonight. - Ben Smith of Politico

You just don’t call a man like Barack Obama with a long standing political record of achievements someone that has never passed any legislation… Ever? Has the Governor from Alaska never heard of or even used FactCheck.org? Or is she too computer illiterate like her running mate?

John McCain has no plans to change our government other than more of the same for him and all the millionaires that can not find enough ways to get money to his campaign coffers. His idea of alternative energy sources is drilling the hell out of every acre of land in America, Palin’s plans are record and Alaska sells a huge percentage of its natural gas to Japan and the far east. Facts are funny things like that. You can lie all you want but the facts never change.

“The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.”
James A. Garfield

Words to live by and in this current political campaign, many people are living the miserable truth rather than the McCain and Palin lies. Keep on bashing Governor Palin, Barack Obama can use all the cash you raise for him!

I'm guessing that she really can't sell this bridge!
