McCain Fixes Bailout but Does Not?

How can John McCain declare a victory in the press for a Wall Street Bailout before the vote in the Congress? Is this the same ideology he brings with his 100 year war plan for Iraq? Is he in control of a crystal ball that tells all to the holder? It looks to me like somebody was left holding the ball and it was handed squarely in the hands of John McCain today.

The bailout plan as it was written flunked the political litmus test of both parties and this is not about the economy. It is about four hundred plus people getting re-elected. Needless to say, John McCain declared the bill passed before the vote. Over at Politico they have this to say on it…

McCain takes credit for bill before it loses

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and his top aides took credit for building a winning bailout coalition – hours before the vote failed and stocks tanked.

Shortly before the vote, McCain had bragged about his involvement and mocked Sen. Barack Obama for staying on the sidelines.

“I've never been afraid of stepping in to solve problems for the American people, and I'm not going to stop now,” McCain told a rally in Columbus, Ohio. “Sen. Obama took a very different approach to the crisis our country faced. At first he didn't want to get involved. Then he was monitoring the situation.”
McCain, grinning, flashed a sarcastic thumbs up.

“That's not leadership. That's watching from the sidelines,” he added to cheers and applause.

Doug Holtz-Eakin, McCain's senior policy adviser, told reporters on a conference call that McCain "dedicated the past week" to addressing the problem but made "a conscious decision not to attract attention to John McCain."

"He's made dozens of calls," Holtz-Eakin said.

Asked if McCain bears any responsibility for the bill's failure, Holtz-Eakin said McCain "improved it greatly — took the lead in the need for taxpayer protections." - Politico

Don’t be surprised this bill did not pass. Constituents across America were calling in to their elected leaders in the Congress and their voices were louder and clearer than a call from George Bush or any other lame duck office holder.

How John McCain had this bill passed before the vote even happened in the Congress is another mystery. Barack Obama was merely “monitoring” the situation which is what real leaders should do. You don’t guess that anything is safe when the pool you are diving into is empty and you just dove off the high board knowing you could not swim. What is that old saying that we heard from our parents over and over again when we blindly followed our friends doing the wrong thing? “If so and so jumped off a bridge would you too?”
