November Elections

The moment a mere numerical superiority by either states or voters in this country proceeds to ignore the needs and desires of the minority, and for their own selfish purpose or advancement, hamper or oppress that minority, or debar them in any way from equal privileges and equal rights—that moment will mark the failure of our constitutional system.
Franklin D. Roosevelt

The current state of power in the Congress and the Senate has a distinct lopsided effect on the legislation that they pass. For the most part the Democrats can all go home and the mini publicans will call them back come next November when it is their turn to sit down. So I was thinking about what the capitol will be like under Speaker of the House Nancy Polosi.

I think everyone pretty much knows that the mini publicans are done for this fall. Even the hard core conservatives are abandoning Bush. With the kind of popularity Bush is carrying around lately even a Presidential endorsement will do little to help keep them in office. Oil prices are slamming the folks hard in the pocketbook and it doesn’t look like anyone in DC is going to do a thing about it. The atmosphere of corruption is so thick in the air that you can taste it. Passing legislation on lobbying reform that does little or nothing once more sends the wrong message back home. Not a good thing especially if you have one of those little red R’s attached to your name and campaigning for re-election. The Dems can sit down and just wait for the polls to close and take the leadership back.

The Dems need 16 seats to take the congress back and I’m wondering if anyone has put any serious thought into the possibility that they may take back far more than that? I think that at the height of the Nixon Watergate events the mini publicans lost forty seats in that election. I’m going to have to go surfing the net to see if anyone has some numbers on what November is really looking like. I keep seeing across the board that people believe that the Dems should control the Congress but I would really like to see some numbers to back that statement up.
