Grammy Moves to White House

All of the mother in law jokes aside, President Elect Obama and his family will have his children’s grandmother move into the White House too. Michelle’s Mom, Marian Robinson, who is a huge part of the Obama kids lives will be setting up house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue too. Good for her and the kids! While the President is busy doing stuff to save the economy from a never ending tailspin, Grandma can serve up home made cookies and milk to the kids and read a story to them. While our new First Lady is having tea with the Washington, D.C. society, Grandma can take the kids to a movie with an armada of Secret Service. And when it comes to after-hours at the White House, Grandma at the dinner table is always a welcomed blessing for any family.

I don’t know about you but this is a President’s children issue and Grand Ma, Granny, Gramma, Grammy, Meme, Nana, and any other definition of a grandmother legally supersedes the office of even the President. It's in the fine print of every marriage liscense. Even the Congress can not overrule the powers of the Obama kids Grandmother. Damn those “Thou shalt honor thy Mother and Father” clauses. I'm sure that the extreme right wing of politics is working on temporarily suspending that clause but we shall see.

Over at the New York Times they have this to say about President Elect Obama’s mother in law moving into the White House…

Obama’s Mother-in-Law to Move Into the White House
By Rachel L. Swarns

It’s official: Marian Robinson, the 71-year-old mother-in-law of President-elect Barack Obama, will be moving into the White House, transition officials said on Friday.
In fact, Mrs. Robinson is already in town, helping to smooth the family’s personal transition as Mr. Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters prepare for new lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“She is here to help them get up and running,’’ said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama. “She will determine in the coming months whether or not she wants to stay in D.C. permanently.”

In some ways, Mrs. Robinson’s decision to move – at least temporarily — is no real surprise. During the presidential campaign, Mrs. Robinson was a family mainstay, caring for the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia, while their parents were on the road.

When you really think about it, and my wife offered this point, the Secret Service would automatically be assigned to protect Michelle Obama’s mother anyway. Do you think for a minute that the Secret Service would not have to provide protection for the President's widowed mother in law that would be living alone in Chicago? They would have to set up an entire field office in Chicago just for Marian Robinson. If she is living in the White House, there is no additional expense. Is this enough for those on the right side of the aisle to say he is a budget hawk or are they going to go about her taking the ultimate public housing? Let me correct that statement. Mrs. Robinson owns her own home in Chicago so toss that crappy excuse for sleaze out!

I think Grandma Robinson should start up a blog on life in the White House from a Grandmothers perspective. Wouldn’t you love to read about the Obama kids and their adventures as kids growing up in the most exclusive house in America? I know I sure as hell would. I'm pretty sure the Disney people might be willing to pay for the opportunity!

Somebody call the DNC or MSNBC and Disney to get this ball rolling, Granny Robinson needs to be on the payroll for inside coverage! Where did I put that personal phone book?

In almost every rally on the campaign trail, Michelle gave credit to her mother for being there for Sasha and Malia. At these girls’ age, Mrs. Robinson has made a motherly imprint on them that should not be torn away, especially in such a crucial time in their lives. Imagine how overwhelming all this has been for two little girls, especially moving away from everything they’ve ever know. How wonderful that their grandmother will make this transition with them! And, she has the capacity to turn around the negative connotation we’ve always associated with that other “Mrs. Robinson.” I’ve been sitting here singing that Simon and Garfunkel song the whole time I was reading your blog, LOL. Weird! BJ

Don't want this to be a red herring from your post's subject, but if you like trivia: a song stuck in your head is called an "earwig." :-) BJ
