Independent’s Give Biden the Debate

Over at Swamp Politics they had a survey of not just Democrats and Republicans but Independent voters during the Biden, Palin debate. It was done in live time over cell phones during the debate and the results might surprise you.

Of course Democrats and Republicans favored their candidate on every issue presented to the group but Independents were not in lock step with Governor Palin or John McCain. These results give you a better perspective of what direction this race for President is really going.

Again this is from Swamp Politics…

The questions and polling results from Independents:

Who won the debate? Biden 69%, Palin 31%
Washington Bailout Reaction? Biden 62%, Palin 38%
VP Responsibilities? Biden 72%, Palin 28%
Threat to US from Iran/Pakistan? Biden 66%, Palin 34%
Climate Change? Biden 64%, Palin 34%
Taxes? Biden 72%, Palin 28%

Thanks to Swamp Politics for the poll numbers.

Biden clearly is knowledgeable, while Palen only seemed able to reference her "record on energy" when asked about any other topic during the first half of the debate. During the second half, her brand of "straight talk" seemed to weave down even the short path of her limited knowledge of issues and records. And there is a certain amount of professionalism that I think the public expects from its leaders, and her down-homeyness coupled with her inexperience doesn't bolster confidence.

It's scary to think of Palen as President, which would be a distinct possibility if McCain were elected. But even Biden's knowledge won't sway me from voting for an independent candidate, especially considering how each candidate voted on the freshly passed bailout (swindling of Americans) plan.

Aaand... I must stop spelling her name with an "e." *blush* It's one of those stupid mistakes I repeatedly make and catch after the fact. Doh! *looking for tape to put over the "e" key...*

Chell! Ya know I think highly of you and I know you as a very intelligent woman but I have to disagree with you on this one.

I would like to ask you first if you think an Independent candidate for President could actually win the White House? Then on the bailout issue, nobody in America has a choice on this one. The home lending market destroyed this nations banking system and one of the candidates running for President was all in favor for banking deregulation his entire political career. (McCain)

Now I would like to ask you to look at the bigger picture of America. We have a two party system whether you and I like it or not. Is it fair, hell no! Is it right, hell no! Does it make sense, hell no! But it is one or the other that will take the oath of President next January. In that context and feel free to correct me, by voting for an Independent candidate are you not also throwing a vote to McCain that is not going to Obama? When I thought about it, your protest Independent vote seems to favor McCain because it takes your voice out of the two party system that we have to put up with to elect a President.

Don't get me wrong, I'm Independent on many issues or as they say stuck in the middle as I'm sure you are too. Now more than ever America needs to vote its wallet and not its political loyalties. We need serious change and frankly the only one offering help to the middle class and lower class of America is Obama. That would be us! I can't afford another four years of Bush mentality and favors to the upper class and special interest benefiting from the wars.

Let me know what you think Chell? Hugs to you, Bob and the family.

*bear hugs back*

I don't look at it as whether or not an independent candidate will win, but rather whether or not he should win, which is why anyone should cast a vote in the first place. Where many Democrats are incorrect, when it comes to Ralph Nader, is that their candidate simply did not earn, in the first place, the votes that will go to Nader. Obama wouldn't get all of these votes even without Nader in the running. He doesn't represent us. Period. And it is wholly anti-American for the two major parties to try to hide the voices of third party candidates from the American public, like what happens with publicized debates. I will go home after voting knowing I've cast my vote for the best (my opinion, obviously not everyone else's) candidate, not for the candidate I was expected by anyone else to vote for. If there weren't such a suitable candidate on the ballot, I'd either have to write someone in or not vote at all.

I'm sure most citizens feel just as strongly about their chosen candidates though. :) In any case, Biden did walk away the winner from this two-party debate.

I'm going to stick that "bear hug" in a draw for a rainy cold day. Do I have to share it with all the girls?

Great points Chell and I respect your opinion on this issue. It is after all your right to vote for the candidate you think best qualified for the job as President.

Okay, the temp is down to 54 degreees, it's overcast here so I just might need you to FedX another bear hug soon. The girls sucked up all the "bear" in the hug you sent and left me with a "How ya doing, paper or plastic Sir hug" ... LOL!

Hi -
I hope I'm not intruding on a family conversation here.

But I wanted to say that I understand voting for candidates other than those in the two (currently) major parties during a primary. I think those votes can sometimes "send a message".

However when it comes to the actual presidential election, I think it comes down to making a choice between the two most viable candidates. To do otherwise leaves the presidential election to other voters.

At one point I read someone's opinion that because of Senator Obama's support of an energy bill which included offshore drilling, they would not vote for him. Instead they would vote for a "third party" candidate. In that instance it seems clear that withholding a vote for Obama is conceding a vote to John "Drill-Baby-Drill" McCain.

No paper, Papamoka, and no plastic... renewable hugs. 54 degrees- doesn't it seem like summer lasted only a few days this year?

Lee, I don't plan on voting for a candidate other than the Democrat or Republican choices simply to make a point. I plan on doing so because my vote should go to the one I truly believe should be in the White House. The media may portray it as a choice between only two parties, but that doesn't make it so. A vote for whichever candidate is just that. It doesn't make sense to claim a vote is cast for McCain when it is clearly cast for Nader. What about people who write in their pets' names? Who do the pets steal votes from? Or perhaps those people find no suitable candidate. Again, third party candidates aren't stealing votes. They're giving many of us the only valid option on the ballot.

I'm done hijacking this comment section now. ;)
