Victoria Reggie Kennedy vs. Scott Brown

One has to ask yourself if the widow of the Liberal Lion in the U.S. Senate should even have to consider a run for his seat. As the wife of a man that was very passionate about his politics I’m sure there were many discussions at the dinner table regarding the events of the day. I’m sure that Victoria Reggie Kennedy learned by osmosis the skills needed to be an effective politician from her husband. She above all knows the bobbing and weaving that it takes to get half of what you want done in the U.S. Senate. That being said, nobody can force her to run against Scott Brown for the Liberal Lions seat when it comes to what would have been re-election of Teddy Kennedy. Some of the folks in the Democratic Party are thinking that she must run according to this piece in the Washington Post…

Prominent Democrats want Kennedy's widow to run for his Senate seat

Nearly one year after Edward M. Kennedy's death, prominent Democrats in Washington and Massachusetts are promoting his widow as the party's best shot at winning back the Senate seat he held for nearly five decades.

Though she has seemed to bat down the idea of challenging Sen. Scott Brown (R) in 2012, Victoria Reggie Kennedy has been in some ways acting the part of a candidate. She has raised her public profile by campaigning for other politicians and appearing at events across the country.

The prospect of her candidacy is fast becoming a source of family tension, according to several Kennedy intimates. Some relatives fear that a campaign against Brown -- a popular figure even in liberal Massachusetts -- would distract Kennedy from promoting her late husband's legacy, they said. - Washington Post

Should she consider it? Of course she should! There is no greater insult to her husbands memory than the fact that a Republican out maneuvered a well known Democrat and won the race because he fought harder for it. Teddy Kennedy never saw a fight that wasn’t worth winning, and true to Kennedy family history, he won when others gave up simply because he refused to quit. But there is no dishonor to her husbands memory in her choosing not to run.

Thus, the question becomes, why are his children not choosing to run for their fathers seat? Why has the entire Kennedy clan not put up a liberal wannabe lion in his place for the Senate? Why isn’t Governor Deval Patrick not throwing his hat in the ring?

The answer to that question is the target on your back if you win from the Republican political party machine. Teddy had tough skin and never left the core of his belief to any other interpretation other than the fact that he was THE LIBERAL LION.

I think it would be fair to say that Vickie served her country already as the wife of one of the greatest political leaders in many generations of Democrats. It’s time for others to pick up the torch and run with the ferocity of a lion that needs to get the job done for the people they are representing. And it is her own choice if she sees fit to do so on her own terms.

WHAT???!!!

She's learned the skills to be an effective United States senator by OSMOSIS??!!!!

She should run because it's insulting to have a REPUBLICAN in TED'S seat???

Are you kidding??! You have to be kidding.

The Senate seat in question does not belong to the Kennedy family. This was a popular point when Brown ran, but it is also absolutely true. To think that the Kennedy family should try to reclaim a seat on some sort of idea that it belongs to them is insulting. It would be even MORE insulting for people to actually vote for Mrs. Kennedy or ANY Kennedy simply to restore the seat to the Kennedy family.

As a Republican I have voted for Ted Kennedy without hesitation, simply because he was the best candidate. I certainly didn't agree with all of his political positions, but I certainly realized that he had the power and influence to advocate for Massachusetts, to "bring home the bacon". And honestly few of his challengers had been worthy of even slight consideration. Also as much as it may have been easy to fault the late Senator for his own personal demons, you (or at least I) admired his dedication to champion causes such as health care.

Senator Brown won his seat because he ran a better campaign. He ran a better campaign because his Democratic challenger assumed the seat was safely hers. With that sort of arrogance she deserved to lose. NOW the question SHOULD be what type of job is Senator Brown doing in office. Is he serving the will of the people? Is he effective at advocating for Massachusetts. (No, I do not expect any Senator to be as effective as Ted was - John Kerry with all of his experience falls short on this count too.) Brown has not been some conservative ideologist, he has been moderate and sided with the Democrats. Reelection for Brown is going to be an uphill battle and he certainly needs to remember that he is a Republican Senator in the most liberal of states. As long as he continues to lean across the aisle he deserves the consideration of the people of Massachusetts. Really it should be about the job he's doing and not about what letter comes after his name.

Hmmm, touched a nerve Lefty... LOL!

I never said the seat belonged to the Kennedy family. My thoughts behind the article were to leave the poor woman alone. If the Democratic Party can't come up with anyone that could beat Scott Brown then it is what it is but it IS NOT her responsibility because they did not or can not put up a candidate worthy enough.

As for the letter that comes after his name, that is what amazes me that he was even elected in such a die hard bluer than blue state??? But I agree that Coakley sucked!

So how the hell have you been Lefty??? Long time no chat.

Um....Papa...

"Thus, the question becomes, why are his children not choosing to run for their fathers seat? "

Your words buddy...

Brown is what I've been hoping for, a charasmatic moderate Republican. A guy who has the "IT" factor to win. Even then he couldn't have if Coakley hadn't just assumed victory was hers. And keeping that seat will be a real challenge. Still Brown has done a decent job. He has reached across the aisle, which I've thought from day one he was going to HAVE to do.

If it makes you feel any better I know some Republicans who feel Scott has gone all RINO on them. Well Ol' Lefty KNEW that Scott was a moderate and KNEW he would have to remain one to be viable in Massachusetts. Ol' Lefty is pretty moderate too (and Ol' Lefty feels that it's the Party that has strayed to the right, not the moderates to the left). So it is with great amusement that I watch Republicans grumble about Scott going RINO because they STILL don't get it.

As far as how am I doing? Eh, good and bad buddy good and bad...

feel free to shoot me an email sometime.
